On 19 November I spoke at the conference “Correcting Images 2016: Digitalisation and Development”  in Leipzig. The title of my 1-hour speech (I know that’s long, but judging by comments and feedback received afterwards the audience found it interesting and worth waking up – and then staying awake – for :): Social Media Content for Journalism and News Reporting: Benefits and Challenges – Focus on Verification.

Big Data and UGC Verification in Malaysia

Award

Award

It’s hot and sticky outside, but cool and refreshing inside. I am in Putrajaya, Malaysia, where I just finished my talk on “Big Data in Media and its Implications for Journalism”. It’s part of the EU-SEA Big Data Summit 2016, organised by the EC co-funded project Connect2SEA.  On 4 May, and in addition to the conference participation on 5-6 May, I gave a workshop presentation about UGC verification. All went well. And I am too tired and exhausted now to write more about it. If you want to find out more and get some impressions of the past few days, see some of my Tweets on Twitter to get an idea of what I have been up to.

Kuala Lumpur (CC0)

This week, I’ll be in Malaysia. On Wednesday, 4 May, I’ll be conducting a two hour workshop / presentation entitled “Social media analytics, importance and challenges to assess the trustworthiness of information in social media”. In other words: I’ll be getting into verification of UGC and related issues. What I will present is largely based on the knowledge acquired in the course of the REVEAL project. The workshop is organised by the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) in Cyberjaya, Malaysia. It is part of the The Data Matters Series – Transforming Service Industry via Big Data Analytics.

On Thursday 6 May, I’ll then speak at the EU-South East Asia Big Data Summit. My talk at the 2-day conference, organised by the Connect2SEA Project, bears the title “Big Data in Journalism and its Role for the News Business”.

A busy week ahead. I’ll be tweeting about it under @jospang and, if it fits, @RevealEU.
