I will attend and speak at the CPDP conference in Brussels that takes place from 30 January – 1 February 2019. GPDP is a conference on data protection. This year’s editition is focussing on democracy. I have been invited to speak on a panel that covers misinformation on platforms, and how to possibly regulate and moderate / verify content on social networks. The panel on which I have been asked to present is likely to be scheduled on day 2 of the conference, 31 january 2019.

On 11 June 2018 I presented Truly Media, the tool for collaborative verification developed by ATC and Deutsche Welle under my co-leadership, to Mariya Gabriel, EU Commissioner for the Digital Economy and Society at the Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum in Bonn.

On 16 May 2018 I spoke at the 5th Technology Forum, hosted at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Thessaloniki, Greece. The main aim of the event was to foster collaboration, bring together actors in the IT and media sector, and share know-how and expertise with regards to developing innovative products that have an international perspective. I presented in the session “The Era of Fake News: Minsinformation and Disinformation on the Internet.” (The full agenda can be found here.)

On 15 May 2018 I was honoured to speak and be a panelist at the Advisory Committee Meeting of the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) in Berlin. Topic: mis-/disinformation, credibility, trust , propaganda – and how standardisation could work as a counter-measure. The World Wide Web Consortium is “an international community where Member organizations, full-time staff, and the public work together to develop Web standards.” It is led by Web inventor and Director Tim Berners-Lee and CEO Jeffrey Jaffe. Its mission is “to lead the Web to its full potential.” Advisory Committee Meetings of the W3C, in turn, are members-only meetings (not open to the public) that focus on strategic issues facing the Consortium and future directions envisioned by the membership and staff. I thoroughly enjoyed participating and leading some very lively discussions. As W3C Advisory Committee Meetings are non-public, no details can be disclosed of the sessions. But I think it’s ok to say that a lot of our discussions were centered on the topic of trust and how to restore and / or enforce it.

At re:publica 2018 (which took place from 2 – 4 May 2018 in Berlin, and – according to the organisors – is “Europe’s biggest conference on topics concerning digitisation and society”) I hosted and ran a session entitled “Fighting minsinformation”. It took place on 3 May 2018 from 10 to 11 am, included a hands-on verification session, and presentations about various aspects of the misinformation ecosystem. It concluded with a showcasing of activities and initiative in the Media and Information Literacy sector.

I organised and moderated a session at the International Journalism Festival in Perugia, Italy, entitled Automating Verification? The role of technology in the verification process: status, activities and challenges. The festival ran from 11-15 April 2018, and saw its 12th edition this year. My session took place on Friday, 13 April 2018. With me on the podium were:  from UK factchecking organisation FullFact; , from Amnesty International’s Digital Verification Corps; , City University London, Dept. of Journalism; and from social news agency Storyful. Instead of writing about it, watch the video of the full session here.

On 26 February 2018 I was a panelist at the event entitled Fact or Fake? Tools and Practices to Combat Disinformation. It was hosted at the Press Club Brussels Europe and was organised by the Press Club Digital Forum. The session, running from 6 to 9 pm addressed “the pervasive problem of so-called ‘fake news’: false or deceptive information presented as factual and spread through online channels, for political advantage, financial gain, or malicious purpose.”

On 6-7 December 2017 I participated in the Experts’ Meeting on Digital Image Authentication and Classification in Geneva, Switzerland. It is organised by the Office of the High Commissioner of Human Rights (OHCHR) at the United Nations. Topics were: sharing experiences and knowledge on digital image authentication and classification tools, discuss respective challenges, and establish opportunities for future collaborations. More about the event on the DW blog.

On 29 November 2017 I gave a keynote presentation at the NEM (New European Media) Summit 2017 in Madrid, Spain. Title of my talk: ‘”What the F _ _ _ !?”: Handling and verifying social media content.’ Here’s a collection of tweets I created, using Twitter moments, if you want to get an impression.

On 15-16 November 2017 I went to the News Xchange conference in Amsterdam to talk ‘future of news’ and showcase Truly.Media, our tool for collaborative verification. A great event with an amazing amount of networking done (and rather little sleep…).

On 13-14 November 2017 attended the multi-stakeholder conference on misinformation organised by the European Commission in Brussels. If you did not make it to the event or couldn’t follow the live stream, you can still view the on-demand recording here. The EU also launched a consultation process on misinformation at the event. Interested parties and individuals are asked to contribute their views until 23 February 2018. More about that here.

From 9-10 November 2017 I attended the EU’s ICT Proposer’s Day 2017. It took place in Budapest, Hungary and centred on European ICT Research & Innovation with a special focus on the Horizon 2020 Work Programme for 2018-20.

On 26 October I talked at UNESCO’s Global Media and Information Literacy Week 2017 Feature Conference in Kingston, Jamaica. Topic of the session in which I participated and presented: “Media and Information Literacy in media policies enabling diversity and pluralism.” Global MIL Week ran from 25 October until 1 November, while the Feature Conference itself took place from 24-27 October 2017.

On 5 July 2017 I talked at Blogfabrik Berlin about Deutsche Welle’s engagement in verification of UGC. I presented Reveal and InVID, the EU funded research projects that deal, respectively dealt, dealt with various aspects of social media verification, and demoed Truly.Media, a tool for collaborative verification, currently in beta status. Attendants mostly came from the human rights sector, so this was a great opportunity to exchange ideas and approaches and find out about parallels as well as differences between journalistic and human rights work.

On 29 June 2017 I spoke at the News Impact Summit, Hamburg, about verification of UGC and Truly.Media, the collaborative verification tool Deutsche Welle are developing together with ATC in Athens, Greece. On 30 June, I then attended the News Impact Academy. Both highly worthwhile and hugely inspiring events took place in Hamburg, Germany. They were organised by the European Journalism Centre, with support from Google News Lab. To get some more detailed impressions about the event and what went on, access the blog with a great number of tweets, or take a look at a selection of photos that were taken during the Summit.

From 19-21 June 2017 was at the Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum, where I was involved in various events and activities, including a one day workshop with the EBU.

On 14 June 2017 I spoke at the conference “Defending the truth in a post-truth era”, organised by the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF), in Leipzig, Germany. My talk was twofold: 1) I talked about the misinformation ecosystem in general, pointing to techniques, deployed strategies, values and pitfalls of social media in news, and its verification. This included insights into fact-checking tools and tactics. 2) I presented Truly Media, the collaborative verification platform our team at Deutsche Welle are developing together with our partners at Athens Technology Centre. Aim of Truly.Media: collaborative verification of social media content. A recap of the event, including pictures, can be found on the ECPMF website.

On 23 May 2017 I talked at a First Draft News training workshop. The topic: collaboratively verifying / falsifying information in the newsroom. The talk was directed at parents of kids attending the school, teenagers from year 10 onwards, and anybody else interested in the topic. After my 1 hour session, 10th grade students gave aan amazing presentation on Instagram and its usage among youths. Annemieke Akkermans, NMS teacher and chair of the IT Development Group at the school, then rounded up the evening with an update on the school’s digital media education programme.
