PresentATIONS and Appearances

Here’s a list of (mostly public) presentations and appearances of relevance to my media work. Depending on the language used in the presentation (German / English) information about the particular event is listed in the respective language. Talks I gave internally at DW, or those that are part of my lecturing at FU Berlin, and whatever I do by going into schools for NGO Lie Detectors does not feature here.

(At the bottom of the site, I also link to a selection of audio and video material in which I feature / which I (co)produced, and reference mentions by others).

SOMA, too, want to collaborate in election coverage, and facilitate subsequent factchecking of claims and such like. Of particular interest to me: our tool Truly Media will be made available – in a scaled down version – for verification experts in their collaborative efforts.

From 17 – 19 March I attended a First Draft News workshop in Milano, Italy, that covered practical approaches to dealing with disinformation. The World Wide Web Consortium is “an international community where Member organizations, full-time staff, and the public work together to develop Web standards.” It is led by Web inventor and Director Tim Berners-Lee and CEO Jeffrey Jaffe. Its mission is “to lead the Web to its full potential.” Advisory Committee Meetings of the W3C, in turn, are members-only meetings (not open to the public) that focus on strategic issues facing the Consortium and future directions envisioned by the membership and staff. I thoroughly enjoyed participating and leading some very lively discussions. As W3C Advisory Committee Meetings are non-public, no details can be disclosed of the sessions. But I think it’s ok to say that a lot of our discussions were centered on the topic of trust and how to restore and / or enforce it.

On 15-16 November 2017 I went to the News Xchange conference in Amsterdam to talk ‘future of news’ and showcase Truly.Media, our tool for collaborative verification. A great event with an amazing amount of networking done (and rather little sleep…).

On 13-14 November 2017 attended the multi-stakeholder conference on misinformation organised by the European Commission in Brussels. If you did not make it to the event or couldn’t follow the live stream, you can still view the on-demand recording here. The EU also launched a consultation process on misinformation at the event.

On 5 July 2017 I talked at Blogfabrik Berlin about Deutsche Welle’s engagement in verification of UGC. I presented Reveal and InVID, the EU funded research projects that deal, respectively dealt, dealt with various aspects of social media verification, and demoed Truly.Media, a tool for collaborative verification, currently in beta status. Attendants mostly came from the human rights sector, so this was a great opportunity to exchange ideas and approaches and find out about parallels as well as differences between journalistic and human rights work.

On 29 June 2017 I spoke at the News Impact Summit, Hamburg, about verification of UGC and Truly.Media, the collaborative verification tool Deutsche Welle are developing together with ATC in Athens, Greece. On 30 June, I then attended the News Impact Academy. Both highly worthwhile and hugely inspiring events took place in Hamburg, Germany. They were organised by the European Journalism Centre, with support from Google News Lab. To get some more detailed impressions about the event and what went on, access the blog with a great number of tweets, or take a look at a selection of photos that were taken during the Summit.

From 19-21 June 2017 was at the Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum, where I was involved in various events and activities, including a one day workshop with the EBU.

This included insights into fact-checking tools and tactics. 2) I presented Truly Media, the collaborative verification platform our team at Deutsche Welle are developing together with our partners at Athens Technology Centre. Aim of Truly.Media: collaborative verification of social media content. A recap of the event, including pictures, can be found on the ECPMF website.

On 23 May 2017 I talked at a First Draft News training workshop. The topic: collaboratively verifying / falsifying information in the newsroom. The focus was a demo presentation of Truly Media, the collaborative verification platform our team at Deutsche Welle are developing together with Athens Technology Centre. I only started collecting material for this section in mid-2016… Any findings and respective notifications from your side are much appreciated.

Here’s a recap of the year 2018 by Lie Detectors – a Brussels-based NGO that aims to bring media literacy into classrooms. A highly rewarding experience!

In November 2018 the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) published its News Report 2018, entitled: 50 Ways to make it better. Together with my DW colleague Wilfried Runde I was interviewed by one of the report’s authors, Atte Jääskeläinen, to talk about Truly Media, the collaborative verification platform we developed at DW together with our Greek partner ATC. Here’s the full report. My contribution can be found on page 94.

Here’s a long story about the EU co-funded project InVID, published in FEED Magazine in the November 2018 issue. I was interviewed for the piece earlier in the year to talk about approaches, achievements and remaining challenges in the fight against detecting misinformation in video content. The focus was on what has been done and achieved in InVID so far. Read the full article here.
